Venn Innovation was pleased to host The Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA - APECA) recently, as she made The Junction one of her first stops as Minister.

Minister Hutchings met with the Venn team, then toured the facility which gave her a chance to check out the work of some resident startups and tech companies, including SnapB2B, BillboardHub and Cloud & More.

The Minister was also shown the work being done to prepare the many new workspaces in the large venue as well as a guided tour of Fibre Centre, the network-neutral data centre and network interconnection facility.

Following the tour, Minister Hutchings spoke with the Venn team about the importance of community in embracing and supporting the rapidly growing newcomer population in our region and the continued growth of the tech sector.

Everyone at The Junction enjoyed the visit with Minister Hutchings and Venn Innovation is looking forward to inviting her – and many more supporters and stakeholders – back to see the new office space being prepared for tech companies and startups in Southeast New Brunswick!

NB MEDTECH SUMMIT DEBUTS IN MONCTON THIS FALL

Inaugural summit aims to improve health care delivery in the province

The New Brunswick MedTech Summit, the first integrative health and technology gathering of its kind, is debuting next month in Moncton, NB.

With a goal of expanding and enhancing the province’s health technology ecosystem, the Summit is bringing together researchers, health providers and key health industry members to improve heath care delivery in New Brunswick through collaboration, discussion, and innovation.

Co-hosted by The Mckenna Institute, Université de Moncton, ResearchNB, and Venn Innovation, the Summit will be held on September 27th and 28th, 2023, at Moncton’s Delta Hotels Beausejour. It will feature two keynote speakers: Jeff Leger, CEO of Shoppers Drug Mart; and Dr. Josephine McMurray, Associate Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University and Associate Scientific Director of AGE-WELL NCE.

Various researchers from academic institutes in the province, including the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and l’Université de Moncton (UdeM), will be presenting their areas of research.

new ip program helping startups BUILD, enhance and protect their work!

Springboard Atlantic has launched a new program to help Atlantic Canadian startups protect their ideas and innovations with intellectual property (IP), which refers to products, artistic or literary works, inventions, logos and other things that are created and have legal protection as an intangible asset for a business.

Springboard Atlantic’s IP Advantage Program assists startups in our region develop a robust IP strategy (develop, grow, leverage and monetize IP assets) and implement it, while raising overall awareness of IP in the region.

Under this new program, startups can apply for funding of up to $50,000 and have up to 90 percent of costs covered to develop an IP strategy.

There is an additional $25,000 available to execute the strategy, also with 90 percent of costs covered by Springboard Atlantic’s program. Start-ups must be working with a business incubator or accelerator to be eligible for funding and take IP training before they can apply.

Springboard Atlantic, which encourages commercialization of research in the region by connecting industry with academic resources, will be working with accelerators and incubators - and their startup clients - to provide information and training sessions and connect them with IP service providers to execute their IP strategies.

The Atlantic IP Advantage program is part of the National Intellectual Property Strategy which launched in 2018 to support Canadian innovators, start-ups, and technology-intensive businesses, with partnership and funding from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada under the ElevateIP program.

Mount Allison University - Summer school - free digital skills courses
The Digital Skills Institute at Mount Allison University is offering free digital skills courses leading up to the fall, as a precursor of its Extended Learning Program. Available to students, faculty and the general public, these courses help them upskill their digital competencies for research and employment. Among the offerings are:

August 10 - Digital Humanities Day - build skills in computational thinking
August 14 – 15 - Data Carpentry for Sciences - develop fundamental data skills needed for research
August 19 - Social Media and Marketing
August 19 - Data Visualization and Infographics

Venn Summer Discoveries

Venn Innovation attended a number of interesting events in Fredericton this summer, including:
- the JEDI 2023 Plenary Information Technology (IT) Summit, where we learned more about the state of IT innovation and opportunity in Atlantic Canada's First Nation communities;
- the demo day pitch event hosted by the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Master of Technology Management and Entrepreneurship (MTME) program graduates who shared their innovative ideas;
- The Summer Institute’s 2023 Demo Day, hosted by UNB’s J. Herbert Smith Centre for Technology Management and Entrepreneurship; and
- the Energia Ventures - Accelerator Spring Cohort Demo Day 2023, held at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre.
